<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">While the basketball lovers of the world are occupied with bracketing, the rest of us out there might be interested to know that it's <span style="background-color: white; line-height: 1.3em;">National Nutrition Month!</span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; line-height: 1.3em;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 1.3em;">As a health coach </span><span style="line-height: 23px;">this is a great time to remind people to clean up there eating. Why do you ask? Well, because poor eating habits create problems such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. Most of us know this, but it's good to be reminded that there is a reason for the behavior. </span></span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 23px;"><br /></span></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white;"><span style="line-height: 23px;">I also like to remind my clients that what works for one person, may not work for another. The </span></span><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 19px;">Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics</span><span style="background-color: white;"><span style="line-height: 19px;"> makes recommendations based on the average person, but we are each created differently and with different dispositions. Dairy, meat and gluten all effect people in wildly different ways. </span></span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 19px;"><br /></span></span></span>
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 19px;">If you find that you are experiences help changes in any way, I challenge you to look to your diet to see if there might be an underlying culprit. Often allergies that are subtle can manifest into significant autoimmune diseases, for example. If you find yourself feeling stuck, unsure, or needing support I'd be happy to help you in your quest.</span></span></span><br />

<br />
<br />
Happy heart month--and not just because Valentine's Day is coming up.<br />
<br />
February is American Heart Month, and there is no better time to start thinking about your heart than right now! It is always there for you and in return you need to treat it right. Heart disease is a condition that usually does not manifest until a person's fifties, but can take decades of bad habits to create. Right now you can stop and even reverse the negative effects on your heart and cardiovascular system through corrective eating and regular exercise.<br />
<br />
The Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine has come up with some recommendations that can be found on their website: <a href="http://pcrm.org/health/diets/ffl/newsletter/february-is-american-heart-month">http://pcrm.org/health/diets/ffl/newsletter/february-is-american-heart-month</a><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">Furthermore, Dr. Dean Ornish developed a protocol that proved combative against heart disease using a <span style="background-color: white;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">low-fat vegetarian diet, required </span></span></span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 18px;">moderate </span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">exercise, no smoke, and prescribed stress management techniques. If you are interested in living a long, happy, and healthy life, then made sure you protect your heart with these preventive measures before symptoms </span></span><span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 18px;">occur. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 18px;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">If you are concerned with your current state of health, or have goals of increasing your health, consider working with a health coach to achieve these goals. </span></span>Jamiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04064310252855021343noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2018959510939376336.post-44662352096241632012014-01-28T16:58:00.001-08:002014-01-28T16:58:39.805-08:00Why Exercise Matter so Much!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhx_5-R4ea3DmGTAvKxPxuVt4xYwaTdnLMYPLgnGSKqCH5M7nrKWZ-1PY7wGOHZqcEPfL0RXymi7yUZWwHj3C8R0E48UAwFvaxGTjfiNxxvStznAbdaRIYo2oh92OaHV6lWuRXHVsKpzg0/s1600/runner.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhx_5-R4ea3DmGTAvKxPxuVt4xYwaTdnLMYPLgnGSKqCH5M7nrKWZ-1PY7wGOHZqcEPfL0RXymi7yUZWwHj3C8R0E48UAwFvaxGTjfiNxxvStznAbdaRIYo2oh92OaHV6lWuRXHVsKpzg0/s1600/runner.jpg" height="133" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
We hear it all the time that we should eat better and exercise more. The sound of that prescription can start to grade on you, as it can just seem so generic, but the truth is that those are the basic principals to starting healthy. And exercise is one that the diet industry tends to not want to talk about. So here is a short list of why you should be exercising.<br />
<br />
<div>
<ul>
<li>Your DNA can change</li>
<li>Stress Reduction</li>
<li>Boosts endorphins, leading to a better mood</li>
<li>Protects you from Diabetes</li>
<li>Better Concentration</li>
</ul>
</div>
<div>
So next time you are trying to talk yourself out of exercising, just think of these great reasons. It might just even just extend your life, or at least make it more enjoyable. </div>

With the New Year in full swing I decided to try my own experiment, which would help me work towards my resolutions this year: getting my diet in check and losing weight--an on-going battle with my genes and cultural upbringing.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnyoKteoIfCHMpuDVXNtOsp6vArNLChF4uh1IJCLSpWO7SsJX8mHAuVfoi3gHAN15YYcW_y-RrJmzE6EQGH4mH74t_MDYPA39uPZVeQDSfpl0n6UfKxzdofgjHknu77v3eeW_mNkcSv9Y/s1600/eat_to_live_new.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnyoKteoIfCHMpuDVXNtOsp6vArNLChF4uh1IJCLSpWO7SsJX8mHAuVfoi3gHAN15YYcW_y-RrJmzE6EQGH4mH74t_MDYPA39uPZVeQDSfpl0n6UfKxzdofgjHknu77v3eeW_mNkcSv9Y/s1600/eat_to_live_new.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The first full week of January of 2014 my husband and I began a new diet and challenge with the Eat to Live diet. I had hear about Fr. Fuhrman's research and outcomes from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition, where I am enrolled in a certification program to become a health coach. I then forgot about it for almost 8 months when I came across the book again on my honeymoon. When we returned home I bought the book, and we have now been on the diet for 2 weeks.<br />
<br />
Dr. Fuhrman has a 6-week diet plan as a transition into the "life plan." I have found it to be one of the simplest and clearest set of guidelines out of any diet I have ever tried. Here are the basic guidelines:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Eat at least 1 cup of beans / day</li>
<li>Eat at least 1 lb. of green leafy vegetables / day</li>
<li>Eat at least 4 fruits / day</li>
<li>Limit starchy veggies or grains to 1 cup / day</li>
<li>Limit nuts to 2 ounces / day</li>
<li>Limit caffeine to 1 cup of coffee / day or less</li>
<li>no oils, sugar, processed foods, salt additives, alcohol</li>
</ul>
<div>
While it has been difficult as times over the last two weeks, suck as meeting friends at a bar that where in town, it has also been rewarding. To date I have lost 6 lbs. over the last 2 weeks. My skin also looks cleaner and I just generally feel good. My birthday is 1 week shy of the 6 weeks, so I will be breaking the diet a week early, but I can already see a future eating this way for both my immediate goals, and for long term health. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I would encourage everyone to jump in and take this 6-week challenge!</div>

The JAMA(Journal of the American Medical Association)Report</h2>
<div>
The JAMA (Journal of American Medical Association) released a new report finding that most heart attack and stroke survivors do not adapt healthier lifestyles. More than 600 people from urban and rural countries were apart of a recent study that looked at people recovering from Cardiovascular Disease. The study aimed to see whether participates would make lifestyle improvements. Sadly, only 2/5th of people improved made improvements. The low income countries were less likely to improve their diets to meet these demands of the body; however, higher income earning countries did not do much better. Only 4% of all participants in all countries were able to follow all 3 areas of recommendation, which include quitting smoking, improved diet and increased exercise.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
From a behavioral point of view it is easy to understand that individuals that have held these negative patterns for so many years will have a very hard time changing these deadly patterns. The health field's biggest challenge will be finding new ways to encourage people that diet and exercise will not only save their life, but are actually fun. </div>

<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
After a recent visit to the dentist I realized that I know so little about alternative dental practices. As I was confronted with doing a deep cleaning, I was wondering how did this happen, and was there a cheaper way to solve this problem? I have found all of these helpful, but have not tried the oil pulling yet. I would love to hear if anyone else have found them useful. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAxf2dAv3tgWSMKdBiSoMLmmk0GDtRMbRIeI2Jwt_KmhKPIic4ON4t6ZDQ_uP1S4LEUpiqheDimFvJ820oMM4KSSjjSYl-xbh9wp7Uwv4Kd8gSiwB6ormRLRTV-NWsrxwfyGLAz73eO8s/s1600/teeth.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAxf2dAv3tgWSMKdBiSoMLmmk0GDtRMbRIeI2Jwt_KmhKPIic4ON4t6ZDQ_uP1S4LEUpiqheDimFvJ820oMM4KSSjjSYl-xbh9wp7Uwv4Kd8gSiwB6ormRLRTV-NWsrxwfyGLAz73eO8s/s1600/teeth.jpeg" /></a></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<strong>Here are 6 ways to maintain oral hygiene:</strong></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<strong></strong></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<strong>Oil pulling</strong>This simple process involves rinsing your mouth with a tablespoon of <a href="http://blog.integrativenutrition.com/2012/02/coconut-oil-nature%E2%80%99s-miracle-worker" style="color: #da0016; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">coconut oil</a> for approximately 15 minutes, and then spitting out the oil. The reason it is called “oil pulling” is because the antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal components of coconut oil literally pull out any unhealthy microbes that may be hiding in your teeth and gums. This leaves your teeth looking whiter, feeling cleaner, and having decreased oral inflammation. It can even improve your sinus congestion! Just make sure <i>not to swallow the toxin-filled oil </i>when you’re done rinsing.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<strong>Tongue cleaning</strong>If you’ve never heard of this apparatus, it is basically a U-shaped wire with rubber grips that is used to scrape the surface of the tongue to remove any unfriendly residue. Along with brushing, this will help to remove any toxins that may be lingering in the mouth. If you consistently have a white coating on your tongue, consider taking <a href="http://blog.integrativenutrition.com/2013/02/probiotics-10-things-you-didn%E2%80%99t-know-about-beneficial-bacteria" style="color: #da0016; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">probiotics</a> to control internal yeast.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<strong>Salt water rinse</strong>Rinsing the mouth with a combination of warm water and pure quality sea salt (such as Himalayan sea salt) is a great way to <a href="http://blog.integrativenutrition.com/2011/05/how-anti-inflammatory-diets-help-end-chronic-pain" style="color: #da0016; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">lower inflammation</a> after a dental procedure because it helps to soothe the soft membranes of your gums. It also has the effect of alkalizing your oral pH balance, which deters the proliferation of unwanted microbes.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<strong>Flossing</strong>Brushing alone can’t always remove the tiny food pieces that get caught in the crevices of your teeth, so flossing is a daily must in order to prevent cavities, remove plaque, and promote clean healthy gums.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<strong>Remove any mercury fillings</strong>If you have any silver fillings in your mouth, they are likely made of mercury, an unsafe metal which has the potential to cause a wide range of illness symptoms in the human body. Find a<a href="http://iaomt.org/" style="color: #da0016; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">specially-trained holistic dentist</a> who is qualified and equipped to remove the mercury safely, then follow with a <a href="http://blog.integrativenutrition.com/2012/10/choose-the-cleanse-that-works-for-you" style="color: #da0016; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">gentle cleanse</a> that includes natural detoxifying foods, like cilantro!</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<strong>Get regular check-ups</strong>Seeing your dentist twice a year for cleanings is one of the best ways to catch the symptoms of an unhealthy mouth early, and keep your pearly whites looking and feeling their best.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">

I came across an extensive list recently that I thought was worth sharing. Some of these suggestions I have tried, and they work great, while others are completely new to me. Let me know if you find anything that works for you.<br />

<br />
<br />
<div style="border: 0px; color: #4c4b4e; font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 0px 13px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<strong>1. Eat regularly</strong>. Eat three meals and two snacks or five small meals a day. For many people, if they don’t eat regularly, their blood sugar levels drop, they feel hungry and are more likely to crave sweet sugary snacks.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #4c4b4e; font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 0px 13px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<strong>2. Choose whole foods. </strong>The closer a food is to its original form, the less processed sugar it will contain. Food in its natural form, including fruits and vegetables, usually presents no metabolic problems for a normal body, especially when consumed in variety.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #4c4b4e; font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 0px 13px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<strong>3. Have a breakfast of protein, fat and phytonutrients to start your day off right</strong>. <a href="http://www.bewellbydrfranklipman.com/products/sustain.html" style="border: 0px; color: #5cbfe9; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">Breakfast smoothies</a>are ideal for this. The typical breakfast full of carbs and sugary or starchy foods is the worst option since you’ll have cravings all day. Eating a good breakfast is essential to prevent sugar cravings</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #4c4b4e; font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 0px 13px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<strong>4. Try incorporate protein and/or fat with each meal</strong>. This helps control blood sugar levels. Make sure they are healthy sources of each.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #4c4b4e; font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 0px 13px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<strong>5. Add spices. </strong>Coriander, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and cardamom will naturally sweeten your foods and reduce cravings.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #4c4b4e; font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 0px 13px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<strong>6. Take a </strong><a href="http://www.bewellbydrfranklipman.com/products/supplements/complete-multivitamin.html" style="border: 0px; color: #5cbfe9; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank"><strong>good quality multivitamin and mineral supplement</strong></a><strong>, </strong><a href="http://www.bewellbydrfranklipman.com/products/supplements/omega-3-fish-oils-120.html" style="border: 0px; color: #5cbfe9; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank"><strong>omega 3 fatty acids</strong></a><strong> and </strong><a href="http://www.bewellbydrfranklipman.com/products/supplements/vitamin-d3-5000.html" style="border: 0px; color: #5cbfe9; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank"><strong>vitamin D3</strong></a><strong>.</strong>Nutrient deficiencies can make cravings worse and the fewer nutrient deficiencies, the fewer cravings. Certain nutrients seem to improve blood sugar control including chromium, vitamin B3 and <a href="http://www.bewellbydrfranklipman.com/products/supplements/magnesium.html" style="border: 0px; color: #5cbfe9; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">magnesium</a></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #4c4b4e; font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 0px 13px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<strong>7. Move your body.</strong> Exercise, dance or do some yoga. Whatever movement you enjoy will help reduce tension, boost your energy and decrease your need for a sugar lift.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #4c4b4e; font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 0px 13px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<strong>8. Get enough</strong> <a href="http://www.drfranklipman.com/sleep-tips-top-10-sleep-mistakes-and-their-solutions/" style="border: 0px; color: #5cbfe9; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank"><strong>sleep</strong></a><strong>. </strong>When we are tired we often use sugar for energy to counteract the exhaustion.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #4c4b4e; font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 0px 13px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<strong>9. <a href="http://www.bewellbydrfranklipman.com/products/kits/cleanse.html" style="border: 0px; color: #5cbfe9; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">Do a detox</a></strong>. My experience has been that when people do a detox, not only does it reset their appetites but it often decreases their sugar cravings. After the initial sugar cravings, which can be overwhelming, our bodies adjust and we won’t even want the sugar anymore and the desire will disappear.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #4c4b4e; font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 0px 13px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<strong>10. Be open to explore the emotional issues around your sugar addiction. </strong>Many times our craving for sugar is more for an emotional need that isn’t being met.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #4c4b4e; font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 0px 13px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<strong><span id="more-14232" style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"></span>11. Keep sugary snacks out of your house and office</strong>. It’s difficult to snack on things that aren’t there!</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #4c4b4e; font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 0px 13px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<strong>12. Don’t substitute </strong><a href="http://www.drfranklipman.com/an-overdue-ban-on-a-dangerous-sweetener/" style="border: 0px; color: #5cbfe9; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank"><strong>artificial sweeteners</strong></a><strong> for sugar</strong>. This will do little to alter your desire for sweets. If you do need a sweetener, try Stevia, it’s the healthiest.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #4c4b4e; font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 0px 13px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<strong>13. Learn to read labels. </strong>Although I would encourage you to eat as few foods as possible that have labels, educate yourself about what you’re putting into your body. The longer the list of ingredients, the more likely sugar is going to be included on that list. So<strong> </strong>check the grams of sugar, and choose products with the least sugar per serving (I teaspoon of sugar is roughly equivalent to about 4 grams). <a href="http://www.drfranklipman.com/15-healthy-shopping-tips/" style="border: 0px; color: #5cbfe9; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">Become familiar with sugar terminology</a> and recognize that all of these are sweeteners: agave, corn syrup, corn sugar, high fructose corn syrup, sucrose, dextrose, honey, cane sugar, cane crystals, fruit juice concentrates, molasses, turbinado sugar and brown sugar.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #4c4b4e; font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 0px 13px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<strong>14. Sugar in disguise.</strong> Remember that most of the “complex” carbohydrates we consume like bread (including whole wheat), bagels and pasta aren’t really complex at all. They are usually highly refined or act just like sugars in the body and are to be avoided.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #4c4b4e; font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 0px 13px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<strong>15. Scare yourself straight.</strong> While I won’t say our national love affair with sugar is all in the mind – there is a strong physical component to sugar addiction – one way to kick off your sugar-free journey is to re-frame the way you think about sugar. Treat it like an illicit drug, a kind of legal form of heroin, a dark force to be avoided, and a substance whose use leads to physical ruin. Next, take a look at <a href="http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=7403942n" style="border: 0px; color: #5cbfe9; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">CBS’s 60 Minutes “Is Sugar Toxic?” story</a> – it’s a potentially life-changing report for anyone who needs just a bit more inspiration to help them kick sugar.</div>
<h3 style="border: 0px; color: #d54813; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-weight: normal; margin: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 10px; vertical-align: baseline;">
And if you have acute sugar cravings, try these:</h3>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #4c4b4e; font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 0px 13px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<strong>16. Take <a href="http://www.bewellbydrfranklipman.com/products/supplements/l-glutamine.html" style="border: 0px; color: #5cbfe9; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">L-Glutamine,</a> 1000-2000 mg every couple of hours as necessary.</strong> <span style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">It often relieves sugar cravings as the brain uses it for fuel.</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #4c4b4e; font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 0px 13px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<strong>17.</strong><strong> Take a “</strong><strong>breathing break”. </strong>Find a quiet spot, get comfortable and sit for a few minutes and focus on your breath. After a few minutes of this, the craving will pass.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #4c4b4e; font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 0px 13px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<strong>18.</strong><strong> Distract yourself. Go for a walk, if possible, in nature</strong>. Cravings usually last for 10-20 minutes maximum. If you can distract yourself with something else, it often passes. The more you do this, the easier it gets and the cravings get easier to deal with.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #4c4b4e; font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 0px 13px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<strong>19.</strong><strong> Drink lots of water</strong>. Sometimes drinking water or seltzer water can help with the sugar cravings. Also sometimes what we perceive as a food craving is really thirst.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #4c4b4e; font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 0px 13px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<strong>20.</strong><strong> Have a piece of fruit</strong>. If you give in to your cravings, have a piece of fruit, it should satisfy a sweet craving and is much healthier.</div>

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">Upon reading some recently released CDC essays, I came across a very inspiring one that my inner artist could relate to. The article is entitled, "Giant Inflatable Colon and Community Knowledge, Intention, and Social Support for Colorectal Cancer Screening."</span><br />
<div>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">Over the last 3 years of incorporating Public Health components into my art practice I was really interested in this idea of a 3-dimensional forms being used as an educational tool. Even more encouraging was the conclusion of the essay, which determined that: "<span style="background-color: white; line-height: 15px; text-align: left;">Interactive exhibits can improve public knowledge and interest in CRC (</span><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 15px; text-align: left;">Colorectal Cancer) </span><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 15px; text-align: left;">screening, which may lead to increased CRC screening rates and decreased CRC incidence and deaths."</span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; line-height: 15px; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 15px;">This conclusion is implying that interactive installations can be preventive health tools. We can educate our community to live healthier lives by engaging their senses, and making learning fun. It was reported that, "</span><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 15px;">Community member interaction with the colon model led to significant increases in all 3 domains: knowledge, screening intention, and social support."</span></span></div>

Did you know that every April is STD Prevention month? Every year there are 20 million people that become infected by STD's. This costs us all collectively 16 billion dollars each year! Since half of all new STD's are among youth, make sure to talk to the young people in your life, or mention it to their parents as an important topic that should be addressed. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Below is a great infographic from the CDC about the statistics about STD's. Learn something new, and then share with people in your community. Prevention is a great way to stay healthy!</div>

I guess that just goes to show you how dangerous marriage can be! All jokes aside, there are some great, simple tips that the CDC recommends:<br />
<br />
<h2>
<u style="font-weight: normal;">Wedding Checklist: 10 Tips for Physical and Mental Health</u></h2>
<br />
<ol>
<li>Get at least 2½ hours of physical activity a week. The more you do, the greater the health benefits and the better you'll feel—not only for the wedding, but beyond.</li>
<li>Do more physical activity if you want to lose weight. Physical activity increases the number of calories your body uses for energy—that is, how many calories your body burns off.</li>
<li>Plan your workouts. It may be tempting to cram in workouts to drop weight quickly right before the wedding day, but this can lead to unwanted stress and injury.</li>
<li>Love yourself and others with heart-healthy eating that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables and foods low in sugar, salt, and saturated fat. Avoid crash diets. Check out heart-healthy menus for the wedding, reception, and other celebrations.</li>
<li>If you smoke, quit now. It's a perfect gift to yourself and loved ones.</li>
<li>Learn ways to manage stress, including finding support and asking for help, connecting socially, maintaining a normal routine, setting limits, and relaxing. Talk with others about your feelings and take care of yourself by sticking to your normal routine.</li>
<li>Drink alcoholic beverages in moderation, which is defined as no more than 1 drink per day for women, and up to 2 drinks per day for men. Choose not to drink and drive.</li>
<li>Get 7-9 hours of sleep each night.</li>
<li>If you're going abroad for your honeymoon, get travel health information for your location. Know what vaccinations you will need for the trip.</li>
<li>Get your check-up. Don't put off exams and health screenings.</li>
</ol>
<div>
<h2>
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><u>Preparing for Your Honeymoon</u></span></h2>
<ul style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; list-style-image: initial; list-style-position: initial; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px !important; padding: 0px; text-align: left;" type="disc">
<li style="margin: 0.7em 0px 0.7em 1.5em; padding: 0px;">Research ways to stay safe and healthy during your honeymoon. Keep up with latest travel information and safety tips from the <span class="cdc-decorated" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"><a class="external" href="http://travel.state.gov/" style="color: #4a006e; display: inline; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">U.S Department of State.</a><a class="external" href="http://www.cdc.gov/Other/disclaimer.html" style="color: #4a006e; display: inline; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank"><img alt="External Web Site Icon" class="externalImg" src="http://www.cdc.gov/TemplatePackage/images/icon_out.png" style="border: none; display: inline; height: auto; left: 3px; margin: 0px 0.25em 0px 0px; max-width: 100%; padding: 0px; position: relative; vertical-align: baseline; width: auto;" title="External Web Site Icon" /></a></span></li>
<li style="margin: 0.7em 0px 0.7em 1.5em; padding: 0px;"><a href="http://www.cdc.gov/Features/CruiseShipTravel/" style="color: #4a006e; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none;">Stay healthy on a cruise</a>. Cruise ship outbreaks of nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, primarily caused by norovirus, have been reported. The best way to prevent illness is frequent handwashing with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, alcohol-based hand sanitizer (containing at least 60% alcohol) is a good second choice. You will see hand sanitizer dispensers throughout your cruise ship—use them.</li>
<li style="margin: 0.7em 0px 0.7em 1.5em; padding: 0px;">Check the <a href="http://wwwn.cdc.gov/InspectionQueryTool/InspectionSearch.aspx" style="color: #4a006e; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none;">health scores for cruise ships</a>. Vessel sanitation programs give information on everything from the cleanliness of cutting boards to food inspection reports.</li>
<li style="margin: 0.7em 0px 0.7em 1.5em; padding: 0px;">Whether you're going abroad or staying close to home, pack and use sunscreen, insect repellent, and appropriate safety gear for activities (such as helmets, life jackets, and knee pads). These steps may lower your risk for illness and injury.</li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<h2>
<u style="font-weight: normal;">Being True to Yourself</u></h2>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 1.33em; margin-top: 1em; padding: 0px;">
<img alt="Photo: Bride and groom" class="stroke righty" height="150" src="http://www.cdc.gov/features/healthywedding/healthywedding_c200px.jpg" style="border: 1px solid rgb(205, 205, 205); float: right; margin: 0.25em 0px 0px 10px; max-width: 100%; padding: 3px; position: relative; vertical-align: baseline;" width="200" />Ask yourself a few questions. Does your partner seem overbearing or controlling? Is there any abuse or violence in your relationship? Often, <a href="http://www.cdc.gov/ViolencePrevention/intimatepartnerviolence/index.html" style="color: #4a006e; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">intimate partner violence</a> starts with emotional abuse. This behavior can progress to physical or sexual assault.</div>

The New York Times recently published an article by Mark Bittman, the lead food reporter for the NY Times, about sugar's toxicity. His writing sourced the "Center for Science in the Public Interest's" report on sugar levels, which can be read here: http://www.cspinet.org/new/201302131.html<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjV3XfP0vEm_BlzQySeryvivW9vTCw9dLxPsu84hwFLjmG0xDKWSXtqx9ntBwmPL52jcGMajb25uiiqtqZ4jLqC24PPVN4J_A_E1SsSZE1Yzde5cuIheATSb8dxiH3IkuoCuOejIwzekQk/s1600/cspi.gif" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjV3XfP0vEm_BlzQySeryvivW9vTCw9dLxPsu84hwFLjmG0xDKWSXtqx9ntBwmPL52jcGMajb25uiiqtqZ4jLqC24PPVN4J_A_E1SsSZE1Yzde5cuIheATSb8dxiH3IkuoCuOejIwzekQk/s320/cspi.gif" /></a><br />
<br />
In this article scientists are urging the FDA to create recommendations for sugar consumption to moderate daily intake. One of the culprits of this sugar overload is the large sized sodas sold everywhere in this country. Research supports that diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity are largely preventable conditions that have been created and made worse by the consumption of large amounts of sugar. The argument for regulating these massive sized sugary beverages is based on public health concern. <br />
<br />
Which ever side you are on the regulation of food and related products, the issue remains that the public does not seem to understand the seriousness of sugar toxicity on the body. Considering the amount of money these diseases place on our economy, it seem to make sense that the FDA should weigh in on the issue. As the public waits to hear the news on recommendation levels, which Science already knows, regulation is left up to the individual consumer to educate themselves on these issues. As a growing public heath concern continues, maybe one day the FDA will decide to do it's job and stand up to corporate interests to protect the American people. <br />

As such, we as the consumers of these items need, to be aware of what we are putting into our bodies. Below is a list of ingredients that have been banned by most other developed nations. Why we are so slow to catch on in the states? Because often profits come before people. That is an unfortunate consequence of unregulated capitalism. <br />
<br />
Here is the list to watch out for:<br />
1. COLORING AGENTS (BLUE 1, BLUE 2, YELLOW 5, AND YELLOW 6)<br />
2. OLESTRA (AKA OLEAN) - Found In: Fat-free potato chips<br />
3. BROMINATED VEGETABLE OIL (AKA BVO) - Found In: Sports drinks (like GatorAid) and citrus-flavored sodas<br />
4. POTASSIUM BROMATE (AKA BROMINATED FLOUR) - Found In: Rolls, wraps, flatbread, bread crumbs, and bagel chips<br />
5. AZODICARBONAMIDE - Found In: Breads, frozen dinners, boxed pasta mixes, and packaged baked goods<br />
6. BHA AND BHT - Found In: Cereal, nut mixes, gum, butter, meat, dehydrated potatoes, and beer<br />
7. SYNTHETIC HORMONES (RBGH AND RBST) - Found In: Milk and dairy products<br />
8. ARSENIC - Found In: Poultry<br />
<br />
Happy and healthy eating! I occasionally will forget to start the app once I have began my run, and will not want to stop and restart. Some of it's features include playing your own music, incremental updates, and time updates. I often find that on the days that I expect to record my worst times, I end up recording the best times. Maybe I lower the bar just enough that I inspire myself? All in all, this is a great product that is affordable and user friendly. <br />
<br />
Below are some stats about who is using this app. Turns out that USA uses it the most, and 60% of the users are male. <br />

This initiative is aimed at inspiring children and families to create healthier lifestyles through fitness and nutrition. Mrs. Obama's goal to decrease obesity rates is such a nobel and needed goal that I just had to acknowledge the wonderful work. While at times it may seem that the road is just to long to travel for our country to turn around our obesity rates, it is nice to have reminders out there that their is a cultural shift in our eating and physical exercise patterns in the USA.Jamiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04064310252855021343noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2018959510939376336.post-44142679291931772042013-02-28T21:23:00.002-08:002013-02-28T21:23:54.290-08:00The Shelf Life of FoodHow long will that vegetable last? While the length of time really depends of how fresh it was to begin with and whether it is a GMO product, here is a brilliant infographic as a guideline. I should say that this is based off of the FDA standards, and may not be the same as your experience, for example with the eggs. <br />

It is more delicious than sour cream, but still it's own distinct flavor. Give it a try when you feel like something new.<br />
<br />
Ingredients:<br />
<br />
Servings:8<br />
1 cup raw cashews (must not be roasted or salted)<br />
1/4 teaspoon salt<br />
1 -2 teaspoon apple cider vinegar<br />
1 small lemon, juice of<br />
Directions:<br />
<br />
1. Cover cashews with water and soak for a few hours, or overnight.<br />
2. Pour off all water, and place nuts in food processor.<br />
3. Add 1/4 cup cold water, salt, vinegar and lemon juice.<br />
4. Puree for 3-4 minutes or until completely smooth and creamy in consistency.<br />
5. Use in any recipe that calls for sour cream.<br />
6. Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to a week.<br />

My motivation was mostly to get in shape, but then turned into a stress reliever. On the infographic below you can see what other people's are for running. Thanks to the wonderful people at http://blog.visual.ly for this great post of infographics. Don't forget that June 5, 2013 is National Runner's Day!<br />

One of them is Scott Jurek's "Eat & Run." I am still in the beginning bits of the book when I came across Active Isolated Stretching. Has anyone tried this?<br />
<br />
Apparently something unique about this method is that you only need to hold the stretch for 2 seconds at a time. This is in some direct contrast to the usual deep, long holds of Bikram Yoga, where I get my stretching fix normally.<br />
<br />
Jurek gives some examples of stretches that I am looking forward to trying out. On page 34 he gives some instruction for stretching the hamstring. <br />
1. Lie flat on your back<br />
2. Loop a belt or robe around the ball of one foot, holding the rope in your hands<br />
3. Keep leg straight and life roped leg<br />
4. Kepp lifting until you can feel it in the back of your thigh<br />
5. Hold for 2 seconds<br />
6. Relax and lower down leg<br />
7. Repeat 5 - 10 times<br />
<br />
I'm looking forward to trying this one, because a PT friend of mine has told me that I have tight hammies. As the method proclaims, I imagine that this would be a safer stretching method than longer holds; however, I don't think it will replace my monthly Bikram class. Good to have a daily option though.Jamiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04064310252855021343noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2018959510939376336.post-44366921216480731392013-01-10T23:01:00.002-08:002013-01-10T23:01:53.597-08:00IntroductionThis is a new blog interested in sharing new health-related research with others. I am an artist that is inspired by public health issues, and enjoy reading about new research, or just discovering something for the first.
